I decided to compile the number of each state’s 100 largest cities I can name into a map.
…wow, this looks like an electoral map. Let’s actually go ahead and see how that compares to the current electoral map.
In the following map, orange states are those in which I can name fewer cities of the above criterion than the state has electoral votes. For blue states, I can name at least as many cities of the above criterion than the state has electoral votes. The darkest shade of orange and blue represent a factor-of-two difference in the respective direction.
My total state-top-100 named-cities count (392) falls 146 short of 538, the number of electoral votes in the electoral college.
